Why bother?

Ephesians 1:3-14 (Link)

This passage, quite interestingly enough, is one sentence (in Greek). With that in mind, this passage can not be neatly broken up and understood in its various verses as we have traditionally done so. While there is worth in the things that are mentioned, it carries more depth within the greater whole. (Also, the writer has an intended message to convey in his writing.)

Smiles…

smileSmiles…intriguing aren’t they? (The kid is cute as well…) They convey so many different messages, so many different emotions, and tell so many different stories. A smile may say, “I love you.” A smile may show how much joy there is between friends. A smile may tell the story of how one overcomes certain difficulties in life.

A smile at times can be confusing. A smile may say one thing, but is translated as something completely different to what it was intended. A smile that says, “Thanks for being a great friend,” may, on the extreme side, be understood as, “I have feelings for you.” (This is merely an example, so there’s nothing that I need to inform you of.) A smile may show happiness, when really the person is being torn apart from the inside. They aren’t always all that simple.

Then there are times when there are no apparent reasons behind a smile. (If you know me, then you’ll find me having a lot of these moments.) In my experience, these are the most beautiful and powerful smiles of all, like seeing the sunrise at dawn. A smile that arise from the deepest places of our hearts. A smile that conveys that, for all its faults, all its troubles, all its worries, and all other things, life is good.

When was the last time you could just sit and, in the midst of all of life’s worries, smile?

BMI: Overweight

According to my BMI (body mass index), I am overweight. However, the stated limitations of the BMI I find quite interesting, as it were in my case, that it overestimates the body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build. I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m of a “muscular” build, but I can see why the BMI is of no great value. It gives you an indication but it’s always on the dot.

In this morning edition of The Age: Insight, there was an article about the PM’s current visit to China. I have to say, I’m impressed. In summary, PM Kevin Rudd upon landing in China went straight to Peking University to deliver a speech in Mandarin! To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t impressed by his Mandarin-speaking skills that were displayed at the visit of the Chinese president sometime last year. However, my impression of him has changed to a degree. I’m still waiting and watching over the next few months to see how he plays his cards but he has done well.

Joy isn’t always being happy. Peace isn’t always being calm. Love isn’t always being emotional. Sometimes, just sometimes, joy is the hope that we have; peace is where hope is heading; love is what hope for, found in Christ.

awaystatusIM (MSN, AIM, Skype, etc) statuses no longer carry the same meaning that they are supposedly meant to carry. When your status is “Away” it typical states that you are away from your computer. However, it has become almost habitual for so many people to put themselves on “Away” or “Busy” because they simply don’t want to talk to (certain) people.

impulse(Click here for the full comic)

Whether Chris Harding (writer) has a Christian background or not, I can’t say but he really nails a deep truth about human nature here. (Chris will tell you that his comic is about robots, not people, so I should really say, “robot nature”) Either way, it illustrates the point I want to make.

In this strip, Mikey (left) prays to God about a situation that he’s dealing with at school. As he prays, he winds up in a dramatic dialogue (on the basis that prayer is a two-way communication, not a one-way monologue). Mikey finally ends up with this great revelation (as displayed), “How come every natural impulse I have just gets me deeper in the hole with you?”

I don’t claim to know all about the Chinese-Tibetan situation, nor do I necessarily agree with what China has done over the last few weeks, however, I do believe that there is a large misunderstanding of what China is actually doing. Most people don’t understand the Chinese Communist mindset and have responded to the situation as though it was a typical government founded on Western ideals.

What is this world coming to? Father, daughter show their baby on TV

Have you ever looked in the mirror and seen a pathetic person looking back at you? Have you ever looked at your hand after washing them and seen hands covered with the stench of wrongs they had committed? Have you ever looked at your life and think about how undeserving you are of where you are? I have.

“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” The famous line from Snow White fairy tale. What exactly do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you see the fairest of them all? On any typical day, I would. I would see the fairest of them all. The one who has life all together, not a worry in the world. I would see hands that have been kept clean. A life that I deserve to be living. Well, that’s all on the surface, naturally.
